Ground-Water Quality is Affected Near Mined Areas During –98, 45 domestic water-supply wells were sampled in ALMN in the high-sulfur coal region of the Appalachian coal fields (Tully, ). Water samples were collected from 30 of the 45 wells within about 2, feet and hydrologically downgradient (downhill in this area) from a. The Coal River is a tributary of the Kanawha River in southern West Virginia. It is formed near the community of Alum Creek by the confluence of the Big and Little Coal Rivers, and flows generally northward through western Kanawha County, past the community of Upper Falls and into the Kanawha River at St. Albans.
Today, the Sierra Club, Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, West Virginia Highlands Conservancy and West Virginia Rivers Coalition filed a lawsuit against Southeastern Land, LLC, and Fola Coal Company, LLC.,for polluting streams from two of their surface coal mines in West Virginia, the Peachorchard and Ike Fork mines. 3) Coal River, West Virginia The Coal River watershed has been impacted by mountaintop mining operations. In cooperation with state agencies, federal partners, non-governmental organizations, and the coal industry areas of functioning environmental infrastructure will be mapped and formally designated to restore and protect.

This report is a compilation of water quality data for small streams sampled in 27 counties of West Virginia and nine streams in two counties of western Maryland.
Forty-eight of these streams drain unmined watersheds; 79 drain areas where coal has been surface mined. Most of these streams were sampled at approximate monthly intervals. The Cheat River Basin is in the Allegheny Plateau and Allegheny Mountain Sections of the Appalachian Plateau Physiographic Province (Fenneman, ) and is almost entirely within the state of West Virginia. The Cheat River drains an area of 1, square miles in Randolph, Tucker, Preston, and Monongalia Counties in West Virginia and Fayette County in Pennsylvania.

Dyer, Forest Service Usda, Kenneth L. Dyer and Forest Service. DEP is denying these impaired streams the protection needed to improve the quality of the waters of West Virginia. In any case, it’s clear that West Virginia’s waters are in trouble and that much of the problem is related to coal mining — both current production and a toxic legacy from past mining.
The West Virginia Environmental Quality Board (EQB) has ruled twice on an NPDES appeal regarding the adverse environmental effects of elevated concentrations of conductivity, sulfates, and TDS on water quality and aquatic life, concluding that scientific evidence clearly shows.

Data collected in from 38 small streams that drain unmined watersheds and 86 that drain areas where coal has been surface mined include common ions, alkalinity, acidity, pH, 16 trace elements, 5 nitrogen and phosphorous species, specific conductance, suspended solids, turbidity, settleable.
West Virginia Water Quality Trends - Report Long-term (year) trend analyses were performed on water quality data from the 26 AWQM Network sites. Much of the news is good. Concentrations of total phosphorus, total suspended solids and several metals (aluminum, iron, manganese, lead) are decreasing, and area impacted by acid rain are.
Abstract. Comparisons of stream water chemistry over a 2 yr period in East Fork, which drains an entirely forested watershed, and Big Run, which drains a forested watershed 8 % of which is occupied by Big Run Bog, indicated that Big Run Bog had no effect on stream water H + or Cl − concentrations, but with increasing stream discharge the wetland was a source of Ca ++ Mg ++, K +, Na +, NO 3.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conducted the National Stream Survey (NSS) to provide unbiased estimates of the numbers and distribution of acidic and low acid neutralizing capacity streams in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States.
The NSS employed a probability sample of stream reaches to represent a target population of 64, stream reaches in the study by: We sampled fish, water quality, and physical habitat at 35 sites throughout the Virginia portion of the Big Sandy River drainage, a region of intense coal mining.

WATER QUALITY FROM UNDERGROUND COAL MINES IN NORTHERN WEST VIRGINIA () Jennifer Demchak, Louis M. McDonald, Jr., and Jeff Skousen INTRODUCTION Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a serious problem from both surface and underground coal mines.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency () approximat km.Many streams and landscapes throughout the coal region have been heavily impacted by historic mining practices.
The mined lands consist of unreclaimed landscapes with the most common problem being AMD. AMD has impaired stream quality to an extent that no aquatic life exists within many streams in Pennsylvania and throughout coal county.
